Exit through the Alcatraz Gift Shop 2007
The historical site post-generates a moment in history through artifacts and supporting media of authentication (signage, docent tours, etc.). Intervening structures (doorways, railings, etc.), which are necessary for the function and authority of the site, are also blatant denials of its authenticity. These intrusive structures emphasize temporal segregation, distancing the viewer even while their own suspension of disbelief obscures the incongruity.
A critical re-evaluation of historical display begins in the overt recognition and exhibition of those structures that emphasis the authority of historical space, while at the same time disrupting the authenticity. Non-historical objects imposed upon historical space are not imperceptible, it is perilous to treat them as such.
